I can’t appreciate poetry. Does that make me ignorant/uncultured/uneducated? Oh well. I hate to say it, but I find the vast majority of poetry to be cheesy, melodramatic and over-metaphored. I have never read a poem that felt really genuine, and not like it was trying very hard to be something. I don’t know. I honestly thought studying poetry (not by choice, part of my degree requirement) might make me feel differently, but really it’s only strengthened my distaste.
Omg I love you.
My literary editing class spent last week talking about editing poetry and I was like, GET ME OUT OF HERE. And we were reading Pablo Neruda, who is apparently the most romantic poet ever. And we read his most famous one. I was like, This is creepy and dumb. “Why does he want to eat me? Ahhh!” And yeah, it just strengthened my distaste for it. I just…I can’t with it. It doesn’t grab me. And it’s in no way a commentary on your intellectual level if you dislike poetry, in my opinion.
